The Old Library, Mansfield
Bouncers by John Godber
The Old Libary, Mansfield April 2000
This tedious rehash of inner football type society was regenerated
by the youthful and desperately talented group of young performers,
Frontroom. I received the order to see the chips with everything
play with a frown. Having seen it twice before I thought that it
couldn't be done again this century. I was right in that respect,
it was a new century and surely everyone who wanted to has seen
it, got it and purchased the T. Shirt. And guess what, the director
had the divine dream of leaving the piece where it belonged, in
the eighties, Yawn, Yawn.
How wrong can a cynical bastard like me be. The company of actors
tore into the script and kicked it over the bar with every other
phrase. They looked like lads that frequent plenty of pubs and demonstrated
waistlines to prove it. There was underlying eighties music constantly
throughout the play that gave the audience the feeling of being
inside and out of the Night club. They performed the piece with
relish, each of the four actors playing seven characters, with bags
of pants. This was a truly ensemblic Bouncers with pathos and bags
of comedy.
