Front Room dishes up unforgettable evening with Vagina
Monologues
After hearing of the reaction Eve Ensler’s Vagina Monologues
received when it opened in America, I was not quite sure what to expect
from Front Room’s performance of the play as I entered Mansfield’s
Old Library last Saturday.
But what followed was a production which was the most insightful and
enjoyable I have seen in a long time and not, as I had suspected,
an evening of man bashing.
Set in the intimate surroundings of the Old Library, three women kept
a packed audience – which surprisingly included men who appeared
to have come of their own accord – entertained and enthralled
for around two hours.
The result of hundreds of interviews with women all over the world,
the Monologues collect together their frank, honest and sometimes
shocking replies to form a show which is both comical and eye-opening.And
with a title like the Vagina Monologues you can guess what the interview
questions were about – not a show for the faint-hearted. From
amusing anecdotes about rites of passage to stories told by women
who have suffered ritual rape during war time, the three-women-show
covered it all, even throwing in audience participation.
Actresses Jo Stendall, Linda Turner and Polly Wiltshire gave amazing
performance in delivering such delicate tales.
While through the show, Front Room raised money for worthy causes
such as Mansfield and Ashfield Women’s Refuge Aid.
This production was funny, sad, rude and enlightening and altogether
an unforgettable experience.
